BYD e2

2026-09-25 01:30:00

Model Overview

The BYD e2 is an all-electric compact hatchback under BYD Auto, distributed via the BYD Ocean Network. First unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show and officially launched in September that year, it was developed on BYD’s e-Platform as an "all-new smart, quality pure electric crossover". Since its debut, the e2 has gone through several iterations. The core model currently on sale is the Honor Edition, launched on 13 March 2024, which comes in two variants—Comfort and Luxury—both offering a CLTC electric range of 405 km with official retail prices ranging between RM89,800 and RM96,800. The 2023 e2 previously offered a Mobility Edition starting from RM147,800, aimed primarily at commercial fleets like e-hailing services. With the arrival of the Honor Edition, prices have been significantly lowered, boosting its market appeal. Positioned as a key offering in BYD's RM80,000-bracket EV lineup, the e2 targets daily commuting and city driving for families, leveraging an "electricity is cheaper than petrol" strategy to carve out a distinct niche alongside the Dolphin and Seagull in the entry-level EV segment.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the BYD e2 blends various signature design elements from the BYD stable. Early models heavily featured the "Dragon Face" design aesthetic, sporting a large hexagonal front grille with a starry sky pattern insert for an athletic look. Through subsequent model updates, the new-generation e2 sports a cleaner front fascia that aligns closer with the Ocean Aesthetics design language of the Ocean series, featuring sleek, rising character lines for a poised, sporty stance, flanked by sharp headlights. Round the back, the full-width taillight cluster offers strong visual presence, complemented by red sport brake calipers and a sporty rear spoiler to heighten its athletic appeal. The vehicle boasts a drag coefficient of just Cd 0.29, matching coupe-level aero efficiency. Dimension-wise, the 2024 e2 Honor Edition measures 4,260 mm long, 1,760 mm wide, and 1,530 mm tall, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase, standard for a compact hatchback. Inside, it adopts a minimalist floating centre console layout with a clean and functional design; the dashboard and door cards feature a mix of plastic and leatherette upholstery, striking a balance between practicality and cabin refinement.

Powertrain and Performance

The BYD e2 lineup comes in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration, powered by a single permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that puts out 70 kW (approx. 95 PS / 94 hp) and 180 Nm of peak torque. Power delivery is calibrated for daily urban commuting, claiming a 0-50 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 to 4.9 seconds (depending on the variant), a century sprint (0-100 km/h) in around 10.3 seconds, and a top speed of 130 km/h. The 2024 Honor Edition packs a 43.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery pack with cells supplied by FinDreams, utilising liquid cooling for thermal management. It yields a CLTC pure electric range of 405 km and an equivalent fuel consumption rating of 1.16 L/100 km. For charging, the e2 supports both DC fast charging and AC slow charging; with 40 kW DC fast charging, a 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) takes 30 minutes, while AC charging duration follows official manufacturer specifications. Crucially, the updated e2 comes standard with a heat pump air-conditioning system and direct cooling/heating battery technology, boosting cold-weather range by over 10% for more dependable efficiency in lower temperatures.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the BYD e2 rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension setup, a common configuration among compact hatchbacks in this segment. While the rear uses a non-independent torsion beam, the low centre of gravity afforded by the underfloor battery pack gives the e2 respectable road stability and bump absorption, delivering a refined ride over uneven surfaces. On the dynamic and safety control front, the e2 comes standard across the board with the Bosch ESP 9.3 electronic stability programme, incorporating new digital pressure sensors with 33 times higher precision than previous analogue sensors for finer vehicle dynamics modulation under extreme conditions. Stopping power comes from front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). It rides on 205/60 R16 tyres, with front and rear track widths of 1,490 mm and 1,470 mm respectively, and a tight 5.4-metre turning radius for effortless manoeuvrability in narrow city streets. Drivers can choose from three drive modes: ECO, SPORT, and Snow. ECO mode delivers smooth, progressive power delivery for optimal energy efficiency, whereas SPORT mode sharpens throttle response for punchier low-end acceleration.

Cabin and Features

In-car technology is a standout highlight of the BYD e2. The e2 Honor Edition features the DiLink smart connectivity system and intelligent voice command suite as standard. Hardware includes a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch adaptive rotating floating touchscreen infotainment display (depending on variant) and an 8.8-inch full digital LCD instrument cluster, complete with built-in AutoNavi navigation, 4G connectivity, OTA updates, and voice control for multimedia, navigation, telephony, and climate control, ensuring high everyday usability. On the creature comforts front, the e2 Honor Edition is equipped with standard 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L / VTOL) reverse charging functionality, handy for powering appliances during outdoor activities and camping. It also includes standard smartphone NFC digital key access, allowing drivers to unlock and start the car by tapping a phone against the wing mirror for seamless keyless convenience. For seating, entry-level variants get fabric seats, while higher trims are upgraded to leatherette upholstery; the driver's seat comes with manual reach, recline, and height adjustment, and the rear bench folds flat to expand boot space for added utility.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The BYD e2 puts a strong focus on all-round safety. On the active safety front, all variants come standard with core electronic driver aids including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), alongside a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Rear parking sensors and a reverse camera are also standard fitment to aid parking manoeuvres. In terms of passive safety, the e2 Honor Edition is fitted with dual front airbags for the driver and front passenger, child safety locks, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Its structural integrity is built around a 3H high-strength body structure designed to disperse collision forces and maintain cabin integrity. Battery safety is anchored by BYD's proprietary Blade Battery technology, which has passed stringent nail penetration tests for class-leading structural strength and thermal runaway resistance. For driver assistance, the BYD e2 features standard cruise control across the range, though it lacks Level 2 semi-autonomous driving systems (advanced features such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking are not available across the lineup).

Market Performance and Verdict

Since its launch in 2019, the BYD e2 has garnered positive feedback thanks to its dedicated EV powertrain technology, spacious interior, and low power consumption. However, sales-wise, the e2 has seen rather modest numbers within BYD's stable. In February 2024, for instance, monthly sales stood at just 699 units, while its peak over the preceding six months was 2,106 units in September 2023, reflecting relatively subdued sales overall. By comparison, stablemates from the Ocean series like the Dolphin and Seagull mini EV have proven much more popular. In terms of owner reviews on the Bitauto platform, the BYD e2 recorded 1,527 units sold over the past month, with an overall user rating of 4.73 out of 5 across 2,551 verified reviews. Commendations highlight low running costs (substantial savings over petrol cars), responsive and crisp infotainment screens, and reliable real-world range accuracy; criticisms point to hard cabin plastics, basic seat upholstery on lower variants (fabric), and noticeable tyre roar at speed. Key segment rivals include the Baojun Yunduo (offering a 460 km range, a 100 kW motor, and starting from around RM95,800) and the BYD Dolphin Honor Edition (which is more compact and stylish, starting from RM99,800). All in all, with its 405 km pure electric range, ultra-safe Blade Battery, and generous tech suite, the BYD e2 Honor Edition delivers strong value for money in the RM80,000 pure electric city car segment—making it an attractive EV commuter for budget-minded buyers wanting genuine range and low operating costs.
